Unmasking ADHD in women.

You're a high-achiever at work, but you 'fall apart' the second you get home. You aren't lazy, and it's not a character flaw. It's likely ADHD masking. At Godaelli Psychiatry, we look beyond the surface to provide a diagnosis that actually makes sense of your past.

The basics

What does ADHD look like in women?

ADHD is a neurological condition characterized by a persistent pattern of inattention (with or without hyperactivity and impulsivity) that interferes with daily functioning.

In women it is often misunderstood, overlooked, and dismissed. The diagnostic criteria were largely based on male behavioral presentation, which is a major reason women go undiagnosed or misdiagnosed for decades.

About ADHD care at Godaelli
In women, ADHD often means
  • Failing to give close attention to details, or careless mistakes in activities
  • Internalizing symptoms, including mood and anxiety
  • Camouflaging symptoms: research shows women are highly motivated to hide their ADHD and compensate for it
  • Emotional sensitivity and feeling “too much”
  • Appearing successful and organized on the outside while feeling constant mental chaos on the inside
  • Chronic overwhelm, time blindness, and difficulty starting tasks
The Godaelli approach

Care that actually understands your body.

You deserve a provider who sees the full picture, not just a list of symptoms. We move beyond “standard” care to offer a deeply personal, biological approach to ADHD management.

01

Hormone-informed care

We understand how estrogen and progesterone impact your brain's dopamine levels, and why symptoms often worsen before periods, postpartum, and in perimenopause.

02

Cycle-syncing your treatment

Stimulants may work differently during the second half of your menstrual cycle. We recognize that and adjust your plan accordingly.

03

Support through every stage

Puberty, pregnancy, or menopause: we use every appropriate tool, including hormone replacement therapy, to keep your symptoms managed as your body evolves.

04

Comprehensive testing

Before we build your plan, we take the time to run tests and learn about your unique health profile.

05

Smart medication management

We are experts at balancing the interaction between ADHD stimulants and other medications (like SSRIs for mood or anxiety) to optimize your overall well-being.

Our diagnostic process

Accuracy, not assumptions.

Many adults come in thinking they have anxiety or depression, and sometimes they do. Our job is to find out what's really going on.

01

Comprehensive clinical evaluation

A detailed, one-on-one assessment exploring your current symptoms, childhood history, academic and work functioning, emotional regulation patterns, and hormonal and life-stage influences.

02

Evidence-based screening & differential diagnosis

We use validated rating scales and structured assessments, and carefully rule out anxiety disorders, major depressive disorder, trauma-related symptoms, and thyroid or medical causes to ensure accuracy, not assumptions.

03

Collaborative feedback session

We review findings with you, answer questions, and create a plan together: medication, non-stimulant options, therapy, or a combination.

Frequently asked questions

ADHD in women, answered

In women, ADHD often looks like chronic overwhelm, emotional sensitivity, daydreaming rather than hyperactivity, difficulty starting tasks, time blindness, forgetfulness, and masking struggles by overworking. Many women are the inattentive type, not the stereotypical "hyper little boy".
ADHD can cause anxiety, because you're always behind, you forget things, you're overwhelmed, and you procrastinate until panic kicks in. Many women have been treated for anxiety without success and are searching for the missing piece. Our differential diagnosis determines whether ADHD is the primary condition or part of a larger picture.
Many women with ADHD appear successful: good grades, careers, seemingly organized. But internally they overwork to compensate, use anxiety as fuel, feel constant mental chaos, and crash at home. This is called masking, and it usually leads to burnout.
The ADHD brain tends to thrive on urgency. It needs constant stimulation and often appears to work well under pressure, while normal daily tasks and chores feel unbearable.
It is highly heritable. If one parent has it or a child is diagnosed, there's a family history present in most cases, and many women are first diagnosed after their child is.
Absolutely not. Many women are diagnosed in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, and even 50s. At Godaelli we specialize in adult ADHD, ADHD in women, late diagnoses, high-functioning professionals, and anxiety + ADHD overlap.
