Free and low-cost mental health care
If you are uninsured, underinsured, or between jobs, these are the places built for exactly that. Community Services Boards charge on an income-based scale, and community health centers offer sliding-fee discounts regardless of insurance status. You do not need a referral from us to contact any of them.

Talking to someone who has been through it is a different kind of help than talking to a clinician, and for many people it is the thing that makes treatment stick. Every group listed here is free.

Older adults and caregivers
Depression and anxiety in later life are frequently mistaken for "just getting older." They are treatable. These agencies also support the family members doing the caring — a group that tends to look after everyone but themselves.

Veterans and military families
With Quantico and Fort Belvoir both in the region, a large share of our neighbors have served or are serving. The most commonly missed fact: Vet Center counseling does not require VA enrollment or a disability rating, and family members are eligible too.

What is the difference between calling 911, 988 and a mobile crisis line?
Call 911 when someone is in immediate physical danger, and ask for a Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) officer. Call or text 988 to reach a trained crisis counselor at any hour. Call 703-527-4077 for the Northern Virginia regional crisis line, which can send a mobile crisis team to you in Prince William, Fairfax, Loudoun, Arlington and Alexandria. Because 988 routes by area code rather than by location, the local number often connects you to someone who knows your community and can dispatch help.
Where can I get mental health care in Northern Virginia if I have no insurance?
Every locality in Virginia has a Community Services Board that provides behavioral health care on an income-based sliding scale, and several explicitly do not deny care for inability to pay. Federally qualified health centers — GPW Health Center in Prince William, Neighborhood Health in Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax, and HealthWorks for Northern Virginia in Loudoun — offer medical, dental and behavioral health care with sliding-fee discounts regardless of insurance status. All of their numbers are in the free and low-cost care section above.
What is a warm line, and how is it different from a crisis line?
A warm line is a peer support line staffed by people with their own lived experience of mental health recovery. It exists for the moments beforea crisis — when you need to talk, want ideas for coping, or are looking for local resources. Virginia's peer-run Warm Line is free and anonymous by call, text or chat at 866-400-6428.
Which Community Services Board serves my county?
Prince William County, Manassas and Manassas Park are served by Prince William County Community Services. Fairfax County, Fairfax City and Falls Church are served by the Fairfax-Falls Church CSB. Loudoun County is served by Loudoun County MHSADS. Arlington and Alexandria each run their own. Fauquier County is served by Encompass Community Supports. Stafford, Spotsylvania and Fredericksburg are served by the Rappahannock Area CSB.
Do veterans have to be enrolled in VA health care to get free counseling?
No. Vet Centers provide free individual, group, family and bereavement counseling to eligible service members, veterans and their family members without requiring enrollment in VA health care or a disability rating. The Vet Center Call Center is staffed around the clock at 877-927-8387.
