When Burnout Needs Professional Help: The Signs It's Past Self-Care

Plenty of advice treats burnout as a self-care problem: take a bath, set a boundary, log off. Sometimes that's genuinely enough. A few patterns suggest burnout has moved past what rest and boundaries can fix: the exhaustion no longer lifts even after time off; your sleep, appetite, or concentration are significantly disrupted; you feel persistently hopeless, numb, or detached beyond just your job; you're using alcohol or other substances to cope; or your functioning at work and home has meaningfully declined.
