A welcoming first psychiatric evaluation visit with a provider listening attentively

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is the foundation of good care. Before any prescription or treatment plan, we take the time to understand your full story: your symptoms, your history, your goals, and the life you want to get back to. At Godaelli Psychiatry and Mental Health Center, this thorough first visit is how we get the diagnosis right and shape care that actually fits you. Available online or in person across Virginia, Maryland, and Washington, D.C.

What is a Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation?

A comprehensive psychiatric evaluation is an in-depth assessment of your mental, emotional, and behavioral health. It is more than a quick screening. Your provider gathers a complete picture of what you are experiencing and what may be contributing to it, so that any diagnosis is accurate and any treatment is the right one from the start.

This first visit sets the direction for everything that follows. Whether you are seeking help for the first time, looking for a second opinion, or returning to care after time away, a careful evaluation makes sure you are treated as a whole person, not just a set of symptoms.

What We Assess

During your evaluation, your provider explores the areas that shape your mental health and your diagnosis:

  • Your concerns and symptoms: What you are experiencing now, when it began, and how it affects your daily life, work, and relationships.
  • Psychiatric and medical history: Past diagnoses, hospitalizations, treatments that helped or did not, and any physical health conditions or medications that may be involved.
  • Family and personal history: Relevant family mental health history and the life experiences that inform your care.
  • Lifestyle factors: Sleep, stress, substance use, and the everyday patterns that influence how you feel.
  • Your goals: What recovery and well-being look like for you, so your plan is built around what matters most.

When it adds clarity, your provider may incorporate validated screening tools or recommend further testing, such as ADHD or cognitive assessment, to sharpen the diagnostic picture.

What to Expect

Your first appointment is unhurried and collaborative. You can expect:

  • A genuine conversation: Time to share your story with a provider who listens without rushing.
  • A clear diagnosis: A thoughtful explanation of what is going on, in language that makes sense to you.
  • A personalized plan: Recommendations that may include medication management, therapy, further testing, or referrals, shaped together with you.
  • Honest answers: Space to ask questions and understand your options before committing to anything.
